Sunday Walk in the Park

Exploring the Sulfur Banks and 'Ilahi Trail - January 11, 2014  This monthly program on second Sundays is aimed at bringing together the members of the Friends of Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park to explore the park’s beautiful trails.  This month’s 3.5-mile round-trip walk explores the summit area of the park. Hike through rain forest rich with native plant and bird life, watch volcanism in action at Steam Vents and Steaming Bluff, plus smell the volcanic gases and see the multi-colored mineral deposits at Sulphur Banks.  Along the way, get great views of Mauna Loa, Pele’s home at Halema'uma'u Crater, and Kilauea Caldera, one of the most active volcanoes on earth. Starting and ending at the Kilauea Visitor Center, we will follow Crater Rim Trail to Byron Ledge Trail, Halema‘uma‘u Trail, ‘Iliahi Trail, and Sulphur Banks Trail.  Total round-trip distance is approximately 3.5 miles with a 400’ vertical descent and ascent.  We will meet at the Kilauea Visitor's Center at 11:45 am due the walk time change - now 12:00pm - 2:00pm; To register, contact Friends of Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park at (808) 985-7373, email us at admin@fhvnp.org or directly on our website. This event is presented by the Friends of Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. Program cost is FREE for Friends members.
